DIY ACV Gummies: Need Help with My Failed Batch!
Hi everyone! I tried making my own ACV gummies today using agar and some apple cider vinegar powder, but they came out all crumbly and weird tasting. I used a recipe that said 2 tbsp of agar, 1 cup of ACV, and some honey. Did I do something wrong? I wanted to avoid the sugar in store-bought ones. Any tips?
Oh boy, DIY gummies can be a pain. I've been there. Agar is tricky because it sets differently than gelatin. You probably need to heat it longer and maybe use more liquid. Also, did you mix the powder in before heating? I find that adding the vinegar powder to a little warm water first helps it dissolve. But why not just buy the good ones? They're not that expensive and you know they work.
I've made gummies with gelatin and they turn out great. I haven't tried agar. But for gelatin, you have to bloom it in cold liquid first. And if you're using vitamin powders, sometimes they can cause curdling. I suggest using less vinegar powder and more liquid. Maybe add a bit of citric acid for flavor. Also, what kind of agar did you use? Some need to boil to activate.
Thanks for the replies! @MindfulMila759, using gelatin might be better. Does it work with ACV? I read that vinegar can break down gelatin. Also, I used agar flakes, not powder. Maybe that's why it crumbled. I'll try again with gelatin and bloom it. Should I add the ACV powder slowly?
@EcoEllen107, actually, I've used apple cider vinegar with gelatin and it's fine as long as you don't boil it. Just heat it gently. And yes, mix the powder with a little water first. But if you're using agar, you have to boil it to activate. That might be your issue. Let us know how it goes with gelatin!
