My B12 gummies turned hard and got white spots – safe to eat?
Hey guys, I opened my bottle of Vitamin B12 gummies that I've had for about 2 months (stored in a cool, dark place) and they've gotten really hard and there's like a white dust on them. They also kind of stuck together. Are they still safe to eat or should I toss them?
That sounds like sugar bloom - totally normal for gummies. The white stuff is just crystallized sugar from temperature changes. They're safe to eat, just a bit less tasty. You can try separating them and putting a silica packet in the bottle to absorb moisture. If they're rock hard, you might need to chew a bit more but no harm.
I've had this happen with my own B12's! I actually find them easier to chew when they're a little harder lol. The white stuff is definitely just sugar. I'd still eat them, but if you're worried you can always check with the brand. Some people say they might lose a tiny bit of potency over time but for 2 months you're fine.
As a retired nurse, I can tell you that texture changes don't necessarily mean they're bad. Gummies can absorb moisture or lose it, causing hardening or stickiness. The white coating is likely sugar bloom. That said, if they have an off smell or mold, toss them. If they just look like that, they're probably fine to consume. Store them in a dry place next time.
