Hey all, I bought a bottle of elderberry gummies about 2 months ago. They were soft and purple. Now they're dark almost black and super hard, some are stuck together. Did I do something wrong? Are they still safe to eat? They don't smell bad, just look weird. Help!

Hey BerryNewbie! Sounds like you're dealing with some classic sugar bloom or maybe moisture loss. Elderberry gummies can darken over time due to oxidation, especially if exposed to heat or air. But hard and stuck together? That's often from humidity. If they don't smell off, they're probably safe, but I'd check the expiration date. Also, if they're sticking, try putting them in the fridge to firm up. But if you see mold, toss 'em. Always better safe than sorry!

I've had that happen with my elderberry gummies too! They got all clumpy and hard. I think it's because I left them in the car one day. Oops. I still ate them and was fine, but they were less effective I think. Now I store them in a cool dark place. If they're just hard, you could try warming them slightly in your hands or a warm (not hot) water bath to soften. But if they're discolored way beyond normal, maybe just get new ones. Not worth risking your health for a few bucks.

As a fitness pro, I always tell my clients to check for signs of spoilage: mold, off smell, or weird texture changes beyond the usual. Elderberry is acidic, so it can react with the gelatin over time. If they're just hard and dark, it's likely just dehydration. But if they're sticky and soft, that could be bacterial growth. When in doubt, throw them out. Your immune system is worth more than a bottle of gummies. Also, check if they contain preservatives – some natural ones spoil faster.

I'm no expert, but I photograph a lot of wild elderberries, and they do darken as they dry out. So maybe it's natural? But these are processed gummies, so who knows. I'd say if they taste fine and don't make you sick, they're probably okay. But I'm the guy who eats expired yogurt, so maybe don't listen to me. lol. Maybe contact the manufacturer? They might send you a coupon.
