THREAD: Elderberry Syrup vs. Capsules: What's Your Go-To for Immune Support?Started by LunarLily

Hey everyone! I've been experimenting with elderberry for about a year now, mostly using homemade syrup during cold season. I'm curious if anyone has tried the extract capsules? I'm thinking of switching for convenience, but I'm worried about losing the bioavailability. Also, has anyone tested their syrup's anthocyanin levels? I've been using a DIY spectrophotometer setup and getting some interesting results!

LunarLily, I've actually been using capsules for 6 months! The convenience is great for my protocol consistency. I take 500mg standardized extract twice daily during flu season. The research on viral neuraminidase inhibition is promising, though I'd love to see more human trials. Have you noticed any difference in symptom duration between syrup and other forms? I'm tracking my data but sample size is just me so far.

Oh I'm so glad this thread exists! I've been making syrup for my kids (8 and 5) every winter for three years now. We haven't had a single doctor visit for colds since we started! I use organic berries from our local farm, raw honey, and a little ginger. The capsules seem so... processed? No offense HubermanHopeful! But I worry about what else might be in those pills. The syrup feels more natural and the kids actually like the taste!

OrganicOlivia, I totally get the preference for whole foods! The processing is exactly why I'm hesitant. HubermanHopeful - interesting point about standardization though. With my homemade syrup, the potency varies batch to batch depending on berry source and preparation. Maybe capsules provide more consistent dosing for proper research. Have either of you experienced any GI issues? I've read some reports about stomach upset with concentrated forms.

No GI issues here, but I always take with food. LunarLily - your batch variation point is key! That's why I went with a lab-tested extract. OrganicOlivia - no offense taken! Different approaches for different folks. Have you considered getting your syrup tested? Might be interesting to compare your homemade vs commercial products. I'm actually designing a citizen science project around this - would either of you be interested in collaborating?

Testing sounds fascinating but honestly, I trust our family's results more than any lab numbers! We feel great, we're rarely sick, and we enjoy making it together. The ritual itself might be part of the benefit? But HubermanHopeful, I'd love to hear about your project! Maybe we could compare notes - your capsules vs my syrup this winter? LunarLily, you should join too with your measurements!
