Fiber Gummies: Are We Just Eating Candy?
I'm getting really annoyed with the trend of turning every supplement into candy. Just bought a bottle of fiber gummies for convenience, but look at the label: 5g sugar per serving! Might as well eat a fruit snack. Why not just take a pill or powder? We're adults, not kids.
TendonTom, I get your point, but as a parent of three, those gummies are a lifesaver. My kids won't touch fiber powder, and pills are a choking hazard for my 6-year-old. The sugar is a trade-off I'm willing to make to ensure they get enough fiber. Plus, I read that some fiber gummies have less sugar than others. Maybe check brands?
Interesting debate. From a research perspective, many fiber gummies use soluble fiber like inulin or polydextrose, which are actually prebiotics. The sugar is often added for taste and texture, but you can find sugar-free versions sweetened with stevia or erythritol. However, those might cause GI distress in some people. I'd suggest reading labels carefully and considering a powder that you can add to a smoothie—more control over sugar.
I'm a chef, so I'm all about flavor, but I also hate hidden sugars. I make my own fiber gummies at home! Use sugar-free Jell-O, some psyllium husk, and a bit of honey (or stevia if you want zero sugar). They're easy, taste great, and I know exactly what's in them. Maybe that's a compromise for you, Tom?
