Homemade gummies turning into a slimy mess? Help!
Hey guys, I tried making my own vitamin gummies for my kids using gelatin and powdered multivitamin, but they turned out super slimy and wouldn't set. I followed a recipe online: 1/2 cup juice, 2 tbsp gelatin, 1 tsp vitamin powder. Heated, poured into molds, fridge for 2 hours. What did I do wrong? Any tips?
Oh man, that ratio sounds off! Usually you need more gelatin or less liquid. Try 1/4 cup juice with 2 tbsp gelatin. Also, vitamin powder can mess with setting. I add a bit of agar agar to help. And don't forget to bloom gelatin in cold water first!
Bro, slimy gummies are the worst. I had that happen too. Maybe the vitamin powder has magnesium stearate or something that interferes. Try using liquid vitamins or mix powder with a little juice first. Also, did you use enough heat? Gotta get it to a simmer but not boil.
As a mom, I'd be worried about giving kids DIY gummies with vitamin powder. The doses might not be accurate. Also, gelatin can be a choking hazard for little ones. But if you're set on it, maybe try agar instead - it sets firmer. And check your pH: acidic juice can break down gelatin. Add a pinch of baking soda.
