Weird Side Effect: Bright Yellow Pee After Kids' Gummies?
Hey everyone, I gave my 6-year-old some gummy vitamins (the usual kids' kind) and now his pee is like neon yellow! Is this normal? He's not in pain or anything, just bright urine. Anyone else seen this?
Hey! I'm a med student and this is actually pretty common. It's likely from excess riboflavin (vitamin B2) in the gummies. Your body pees out what it doesn't use, and B2 is fluorescent yellow. Nothing to worry about unless he has other symptoms. Just make sure he drinks plenty of water!
Ha, yeah, my kids have that too! They call it 'neon juice'. It freaked me out at first but after I looked it up it's harmless. Also, I noticed that after eating certain gummy brands, my own taste buds feel weird - like everything tastes slightly off for a few hours. Ever get that?
Wow, thanks for the quick replies! That's a relief. @VitalVince760, actually I haven't noticed taste changes, but my daughter did mention she had super vivid dreams last night. Could the gummies cause that? Or is it just a coincidence?
Interesting about the vivid dreams. Some gummies have added herbs or melatonin for sleep, so check the label. But if it's a straight multivitamin, probably not. I'm a strict paleo guy, but I still give my kids gummies cause they're picky eaters. I've seen all sorts of weird stuff with those things. As long as your kid is fine, I wouldn't stress. But if the dreams are too vivid, maybe switch to a lower dose or different brand.
