My gummies turned hard and white - safe to eat?
Alright so I bought these vitamin C gummies a few months ago. They were soft and clear-ish when I got them. Now they're hard as rocks and have this white powdery stuff all over them. Some are even stuck together! Are they still okay to eat? Or should I toss em? Help!
Oh no! That's sugar bloom - happens when gummies get exposed to moisture and then dry out. The white stuff is just sugar recrystallizing. They're probably still safe, but the texture will be off. If they taste weird or smell bad, toss them. Next time, keep them in a cool, dry place! Namaste.
As a retired nurse, I'd say err on the side of caution. While sugar bloom isn't harmful per se, if the gummies have hardened they could be a choking hazard, especially for kids. Also, heat can degrade some vitamins. Check the expiration date and if it's past, better to replace them.
I've had that happen! I just chomped them anyway lol. But yeah, if they're super hard maybe soak them in warm water for a bit? My kids wouldn't eat them though. I'd prob buy new ones and store in the fridge this time.
Honestly, I never trust gummies that change. Who knows what else is going on? Toss em and get a liquid vitamin instead. No texture issues there. Just my two cents.
