THREAD: DIY Magnesium Gummies Disaster - Help Needed!Started by OP
1/10/2026, 10:16 AM#1
Hey everyone, I tried making magnesium gummies at home to save money and control ingredients. Used gelatin, some magnesium citrate powder, and a little honey for sweetness. They came out super rubbery and bitter - like chewing on erasers with a metallic aftertaste. Anyone have a good recipe or tips? I'm worried I messed up the ratios or maybe the powder doesn't dissolve well?

Been there! I make my own gummies all the time while traveling - key is using magnesium glycinate instead of citrate, way less bitter. Also, add a splash of lemon juice or ACV to help the gelatin set better without the rubber texture. Pro tip: dissolve the powder in warm water first before mixing with gelatin, otherwise it clumps. What's your current carb count per gummy with honey? Might be able to suggest a keto-friendly sweetener alternative.

omg i feel you on the budget thing! i tried this last semester and failed twice before getting it right. my cheap fix: use agar agar instead of gelatin (its like $3 at the asian market) and mix the magnesium powder with a tiny bit of oil first - it blends way better. also, add more flavoring! i use those mio water drops or cheap drink mixes to cover the taste. how much powder are you using per batch? i found 1 tsp for 20 gummies works without being too gross.

The bitterness is your body telling you the citrate isn't aligning with your energy. Have you considered magnesium L-threonate? It's superior for cognitive flow. When I craft gummies for my clients, I always add adaptogens like ashwagandha and use raw local honey - the enzymes help assimilation. Also, are you using filtered water? Chlorine can disrupt the gelling process. Blessings on your journey!

Thanks all! @KetoKevin I'll try the glycinate and lemon trick - didn't think about acidity. @UpliftUrsula521 agar agar is a great idea, and I was using about 2tsp for 30 gummies so maybe too strong. @DynamicDan547 I have some ashwagandha powder actually! Do you add it in equal parts with the magnesium? Gonna attempt batch #2 this weekend and report back!
