Hey guys! I just started taking magnesium gummies for sleep, but I have a serious coffee addiction (like 4 cups a day). I know magnesium can help relax you, but does it interact with caffeine? Is it safe to take them together or should I wait until later?

Oh girl, I feel you! I'm a caffeine fiend too. I take my magnesium gummies at night, like an hour before bed, so they don't clash with my morning coffee. I've read that caffeine can deplete magnesium, so taking them together might be counterproductive. Better to space them out. And honestly, the gummies make me sleepy, so I wouldn't want them in the AM anyway.

I'm a sleep-deprived mom, so I'm all about the coffee AND magnesium. I take my magnesium gummies right before I crash at night. During the day, I have my coffee (sometimes with an extra shot of espresso out of desperation haha). I haven't had any bad interactions, but I do notice if I take magnesium too close to my coffee, I get a weird jittery then sleepy thing? Better to keep them separate.

You all are on the right track. From a food science perspective, caffeine is a diuretic and can flush out magnesium, so taking them together kind of defeats the purpose. I like to take my magnesium gummies with a bit of dark chocolate (which has its own magnesium) after dinner. That way I get a nice calming effect without the caffeine conflict. Plus, dark chocolate pairs well with the gummy flavor if it's berry or something.

I'm all about optimizing my supplements for my keto lifestyle. Caffeine can mess with your sleep and insulin, so I've switched to decaf (gasp!). But for magnesium, I take it before bed, and my morning coffee is decaf so no issue. If you can't give up the caffeine, at least wait a few hours after your last cup to take the magnesium. And make sure you're getting enough magnesium in your diet anyway – leafy greens, nuts, seeds, you know the drill. #KetoLife
