My magnesium gummies turned hard and white - safe to eat?
Hey everyone! I bought a bottle of magnesium gummies last month and I just opened them today. They've turned hard and have a white coating on them - looks like sugar bloom or something. Are they still safe to eat? They're not expired yet. I'm worried but don't want to waste money.
Hi! White coating is usually sugar crystallization - it happens when moisture evaporates and sugar recrystallizes. It's not harmful, just changes texture. The gummies might be harder but still safe. However, if they are super hard or have any off smell, better toss them. Also check if there's any mold - that would be bad. But sugar bloom is fine.
Yeah, what TeaTina said. I've had that happen with my gummies. They get crunchy but they're okay. I even put them in the fridge to harden more - makes them last longer. Just make sure to store them in a cool dry place. Sunlight and heat cause that. But if they're rock solid, you might need a chisel lol. Still safe though.
I've had that too! My kids left the bottle open and they turned into rocks. I ate them anyway - tasted a bit weird but no issues. But if you're worried, you can contact the company. They might send a replacement or refund. I did that once with a different brand. They were cool about it.
Just to add, sugar-free gummies can behave differently, but if it's sugar bloom, it's fine. Check the ingredients for any sugar alcohols - they might crystallize too. But as long as it's just texture, safe. If they are sticky or clumped together, that could be moisture, which might promote bacteria. In that case, I'd toss them. Better safe than sorry.
