THREAD: My toddler thinks magnesium gummies are candy - help!Started by WellnessWendy729

Hey everyone, need to share this funny/scary moment from yesterday. My 4-year-old found my magnesium gummies in my gym bag and ate THREE before I caught him! He said 'Mommy, these are the best candies!' I freaked out and called poison control (they said he'd be fine, just watch for tummy issues). Now he keeps asking for 'the yummy orange candies' and I'm hiding them on the top shelf. Anyone else have kids who mistake supplements for treats?

Oh wow Wendy, that's scary but also kinda hilarious! My husband does the opposite - he REFUSES to take his magnesium gummies because he says the texture is 'weird and slimy.' I'm like, dude, you work night shifts and complain about leg cramps, just chew the thing! He'd rather have the pills but they upset his stomach. Maybe I should tell him your story so he appreciates the gummy form more lol.

Interesting scenario! From a science perspective, magnesium citrate in gummies is generally safe in moderate doses for adults, but the sugar content and appealing shapes definitely create a candy-like association for kids. Have you considered switching to a powder form you can mix into smoothies? Less appealing visually but same benefits. Also, child-resistant packaging is crucial - maybe transfer them to a labeled opaque container?

Thanks for the replies! Zoe, tell your husband the texture could be worse - at least they're not those chalky tablets! And HealthHacker, good point about the powder. I might try that for myself, but my kid would probably detect it in his apple sauce. For now I've put them in a lockbox with my protein bars. Lesson learned: never underestimate a toddler's candy radar!

Update: I told my husband about the toddler incident and he actually took his gummy tonight! Said 'if a 4-year-old will eat them, I guess I can too.' Parenting wins influencing grown men somehow. Still thinks the texture is weird though. Maybe we need a 'crunchy magnesium gummy' option for texture-sensitive people?
