My Kid Thinks Melatonin Gummies Are Candy – Help!
So my 6-year-old found my stash of melatonin gummies and now calls them 'sleepy candy'. He keeps asking for them at random times, and I had to hide them. Today he threw a tantrum because I wouldn't give him one at 3 PM. Anyone else deal with this? How do you keep them out of reach or explain it?
Oh man, I feel you! My husband is the culprit in our house – he grabs them like they're regular gummy bears. I bought a lockbox for all supplements. But for the kids, I made a 'special treats' jar with a child-proof cap. And I told my son they're 'nighttime vitamins' – only for when the moon comes out. That helped a lot. Maybe a visual cue like a sticker of the moon on the bottle?
I had a similar issue with my niece. She refused to eat them because of the 'squishy' texture – she likes crunchy things. We switched to a different brand that has a firmer gel, and now she's fine. But I agree with Olivia – definitely store them out of reach. Also, maybe explain that they're medicine, not candy, and only for bedtime. Kids understand rules when you set them clearly. And maybe let them choose their own 'special' container that they can't open easily – gives them a sense of control.
Thanks for the tips! I'll try the moon sticker idea and maybe a lockbox. I just hope he doesn't throw another fit. And you're right, I should stress it's not candy. Appreciate the advice!
Glad to help! Hang in there, soon he'll understand. And if you're crafty, you can make your own gummies at home with herbal ingredients – no melatonin for kids though unless prescribed. But making them together might help him see they're for sleep. Just a thought!
