THREAD: My melatonin gummies look weird - are they still safe to take?Started by OP

Hey everyone, I need some advice. I bought a bottle of melatonin gummies about 2 months ago and they've been sitting in my bathroom cabinet. I went to take one last night and noticed they've changed - some have white spots on them (looks like sugar bloom?), others are kinda hard and stuck together. They used to be soft and chewy. Are these still safe to eat or should I toss them? I don't want to waste them if they're fine, but also don't want to risk anything weird.

Oh dear, I've seen this with my grandkids' vitamins too! The white spots are definitely sugar bloom - happens when moisture gets in. The hardening means they're drying out. Personally, I wouldn't risk it. My rule is: if it looks different than when you bought it, better safe than sorry. I'd toss them and get a fresh bottle. Maybe store the new ones somewhere cooler and drier than your bathroom - the humidity from showers isn't good for gummies.

I actually researched this when my sleep tracker gummies did the same thing! The sugar bloom is harmless chemically - just crystallization. The hardening is moisture loss. TECHNICALLY they're probably still safe if they're within expiration date, but the melatonin potency might degrade faster in poor storage conditions. Pro tip: get those little silica gel packets (like in electronics boxes) and toss one in your gummy bottle. Keeps moisture out! But yeah, if they're super hard or smell off, not worth it.

Ugh, hard gummies are the worst texture-wise! I had this happen with some CBD gummies last year. They were safe to eat but tasted terrible - like chewing on sweet rubber. The texture change ruins the experience completely. If you're taking them just for sleep and don't care about taste, maybe they're okay? But honestly, gummies are supposed to be enjoyable! I'd say treat yourself to a fresh bottle. Maybe try a different brand this time - some hold up better than others.

Thanks everyone! Sounds like the consensus is they're probably not dangerous but not ideal either. GummyGuru328 - you're right about the bathroom storage, I didn't think about the humidity. FloraFinn847 - love the silica gel packet idea, I have some from my new headphones box! TendonTom598 - you convinced me, I do actually enjoy the taste and texture. Going to toss these and be more careful with storage next time. Appreciate the help!
