Just read a study on Vitamin D in gummies - legit?
Hey everyone, I just came across this study (PMID: 34567890) that says the Vitamin D in most gummy supplements isn't well absorbed because of the gelatin or pectin? It claims you need certain fats to absorb it properly. I've been taking these gummies for months... is this study legit or just biased against non-pill forms? Thoughts?
Eh, I wouldn't stress too much. I've seen studies funded by Big Pharma that bash anything not in pill form. I take my gummies with my morning coffee and a spoonful of coconut oil - covers the fat base. But yeah, maybe check the source of the study. Who funded it?
I'm on a paleo diet so I avoid gummies with sugar and artificial crap anyway. But imo, if you're ingesting fat-soluble vitamins like D, you need dietary fat to absorb them. That's just basic biology. The gummy itself won't hurt, but I bet the study is right that without fat you're wasting it. Maybe take with a meal.
Thanks both! Mike, I think it was from the Journal of Nutrition, so maybe not directly pharma-funded. And Mike448, that makes sense. I usually take mine on an empty stomach during my morning yoga... maybe I'll switch to after breakfast. But still, wish there was more transparency in these studies.
Word. Studies always have some angle. But good you're looking into it. I say keep taking them but pop one after you eat some avocado or eggs. Boom problem solved.
