THREAD: Help! My homemade NAC gummies turned into a sticky mess - recipe tips needed!Started by TeaTina592

Hey everyone! So I've been trying to make my own NAC gummies at home - wanted to avoid the sugar in store-bought ones and control the dosage. I used gelatin powder, water, a little honey, and my NAC supplement powder. Followed a basic gummy recipe I found online, but instead of setting firm, they came out super sticky and wouldn't come out of the molds properly. They're like... NAC taffy? Has anyone successfully made these? Should I try agar instead of gelatin? Also wondering about preserving them since NAC can oxidize. Any science-y tips appreciated!

Oh honey, I remember trying to make vitamin C gummies back in the day for my grandkids! Gelatin can be tricky - did you bloom it first? You need to let the gelatin soak in cold water before heating. Also, too much liquid or not enough acid can cause stickiness. NAC is acidic though, so that should help! As a nurse, I'd caution about dosage accuracy - those home scales aren't always precise. Maybe start with a smaller batch? And yes, oxidation is a concern - keep them in airtight containers in the fridge. My two cents!

lol I feel you! Tried making electrolyte gummies for my marathon training and had similar fails. What ratio did you use? I found 1 tbsp gelatin to 1/4 cup liquid works best for me. Maybe your NAC powder is absorbing moisture? Could try adding a tiny bit of citric acid or lemon juice to help set. Also - pro tip: spray your molds with coconut oil first! Makes them pop out easier. Are you using them for lung support? I take NAC for that too but just use capsules when running.

We make elderberry gummies all the time for the kids! Agar agar works better for us - it's plant-based and sets firmer. Use about 1 tsp agar powder to 1 cup liquid, simmer for 5 min. But fair warning: NAC tastes AWFUL 😅 Have you considered mixing it with something like orange juice powder to mask it? Also, if you're avoiding sugar, maybe try maple syrup instead of honey? Less sticky results in my experience. My little ones would never eat these though - they can smell healthy stuff a mile away!
