Gummies changed color and hard? Safe to eat?
Hey guys, I've had my bottle of Omega-3 gummies for about 3 months now. I opened it today and noticed they're not as soft as before, and a few of them have this weird white coating on them. They're also slightly darker in color. Is this normal? Are they still safe to eat? I don't want to waste money, but I also don't want to get sick.
Natalie, that sounds like sugar bloom to me. Happens when they get exposed to moisture or temp changes. It's harmless usually, just looks funky. But the hardening is just them drying out. As long as they don't smell rancid or taste off, they should be fine. I've eaten gummies that were like that after a while. But if you're paranoid, throw 'em out. Not worth the risk for a few bucks.
I agree with Pete. Sugar bloom is no big deal. But also, omega-3s can oxidize, especially if the gummies are old. That would give them a fishy smell or taste. If they smell bad, don't eat. Also, check the expiration date. If they're past it, better to toss. I'm strict about that because I'm on keto and I track everything. Better safe than sorry.
As a guy who's into nature, I see stuff like this all the time - it's just oxidation and crystallization. The color change is likely from the omega-3 oil reacting to light or air. Texture changes are from moisture loss. Honestly, I'd still eat them if they smell okay. But maybe store them in the fridge next time to keep them fresh longer. I do that with my vitamins and they last longer.
Thanks everyone! I sniffed them and they don't smell fishy, just a bit sweet. I think they're okay. I'll keep them and eat them, but I'll start storing them in the fridge. Appreciate the tips! :)
