Gummy Omega-3s: Convenient Candy or Compromised Supplement?
I just bought some gummy omega-3s for my grandkids thinking they'd be a healthy treat, but then I looked at the nutrition label and nearly fell off my chair! 3g of sugar per gummy! That's basically candy. Why are we turning every supplement into a sugar bomb? Whatever happened to just taking a spoonful of cod liver oil? Is convenience really worth all that empty sugar?
Oh, I feel you, Holly! I remember when supplements were just… pills. No frills. Now everything has to taste like a fruit snack. I tried a gummy multivitamin once and it was like eating a stale gumdrop. Plus, my dentist probably loves me for it. But I get it - kids need something palatable. Still, there's gotta be a better way.
I'm a retired nurse, and I've seen the good and bad of both. Gummies can be great for compliance, especially for picky eaters or people who struggle with pills. But the sugar is real - you're basically giving them a little dessert. I always tell folks to look for sugar-free gummies or try the liquid burp-free formulas. And don't forget that some studies show gummies might be less stable than capsules. Buyer beware.
As a fitness pro, I say ditch the gummies if you're serious about health. They're processed junk. I get my omega-3s from whole foods - walnuts, flax, chia, and wild salmon. If you need a supp, go for enteric-coated fish oil caps. No sugar, better absorption. Sorry, but 'candy-fication' is just marketing to get you hooked. Your body doesn't need the extra sugar.
Thanks everyone for the input. I guess I'll stick with the liquid omega-3 and just make sure to have a chaser of OJ lol! Maybe 'candy-fication' is a sign of the times, but I'd rather not start my grandkids on sugar addiction. @GreenGreg309, you're right about whole foods - I'll try adding more ground flax to their oatmeal.
