Help! My Omega-3 Gummies Changed Color and Got Hard - Safe to Eat?
Hey everyone, so I've been taking these omega-3 gummies for a few months now. I opened a new bottle last week and noticed they're darker in color and some are stuck together, a few have like a white coating. They also feel harder than before. I checked the expiration date and it's not until next year. Are these safe to eat? I don't want to waste them but also don't want to get sick.
That white coating is likely sugar bloom or fat bloom. With omega-3 gummies, the oil can oxidize over time, causing color changes and texture. Oxidation can make them less effective and might give them a rancid taste. It's not necessarily toxic, but I wouldn't take them if they smell off or taste weird. Better to be safe and get a fresh batch – omega-3s are sensitive to heat and light, so storage matters.
From a nursing perspective, I'd say if they're just hard and have sugar bloom, they might be safe to eat, but if the oil has oxidized (which you might detect by a fishy, off smell), they could cause stomach upset. Also, if they're sticking together, that might indicate moisture got in, which could lead to mold. Check for any signs of mold (furry spots) before consuming. When in doubt, throw it out. Your health isn't worth saving a few bucks.
omg same thing happened to me with another brand! I contacted the company and they sent a replacement. They said it's natural for gummies to change with temp fluctuations. But I agree – if they smell rancid, don't risk it. I now store mine in the fridge to keep them fresh. :) Also, if you want a brand that avoids this, I've been loving [Brand X] – they use a special coating to prevent sticking. Check out my link for a discount if you want! 😉
Thanks for the replies! I think I'll toss these. The smell is a little fishy but not too bad... but I'll take the advice and get a fresh bottle. Also, storing in the fridge sounds like a good idea. Appreciate the help!
