Omega-3 gummies are just candy with a health halo, change my mind
ok so i've been trying to get more omega-3s for brain/meditation stuff and my focus has been garbage lately. i grabbed a bottle of omega-3 gummies at the store bc the fish oil pills make me wanna gag. got home and looked at the label... 3 gummies = 2g sugar and like 25mg of actual DHA/EPA combined?? thats basically nothing. why are we calling this a supplement. i feel like i just bought a bag of gummy bears with a fish on the bottle lol. is there ANY gummy out there that isnt 90% sugar and actually has a decent dose?
You're not wrong and the numbers back you up. Most omega-3 gummies have to keep the actual oil super low because if you put a real 1000mg dose in a gummy it tastes rancid and the texture falls apart. Sugar (or glucose syrup, tapioca syrup, etc.) is doing the structural work. The ones that claim 'no sugar' usually swap in sugar alcohols which can wreck your gut if you eat a few. Honestly for DHA/EPA the gummy format is the worst delivery method. If pills make you gag try a liquid or a flavored emulsion, or the enteric-coated capsules that don't burp back. Also check for a 'fishy' aftertaste - if you're burping fish it's probably oxidized and that's worse than no supplement lol.
Agree with Tina but I'll play devil's advocate a little. As a mom of 3, if the gummy is the only way my kid (or honestly me on a crazy morning) actually takes it, then a small dose is better than zero dose. Perfect is the enemy of done. That said I draw the line at calling it a supplement when it's 60% cane sugar. My compromise: gummies for the kids, real capsules for me. And I always check the label now - if sugar is the first ingredient it goes back on the shelf. MangoMia, how many are you taking a day? If it says 3 gummies for a 'serving' you might be getting even less than you think.
The candy-fication thing is real and it's not an accident - it's marketing. Big brands know if it tastes like candy you'll eat more and rebuy. That said, don't throw out the whole category. A couple of brands do a 'gummy' that's more of a softgel-ish chew with actual triglyceride-form fish oil and low sugar, usually sweetened with allulose or monk fruit. You have to read the supplement facts for total omega-3 (not 'fish oil blend') and aim for at least 500mg combined DHA/EPA per serving. If it doesn't list DHA and EPA separately, that's a red flag. Also, if you're meditating and want brain support, algae-based gives you DHA without the fish burps. Just my 2 cents.
ty all, this is super helpful. @PeakPaula980 yeah it says serving size 3 gummies and i was taking 2 so i was basically getting trace amounts lol. @TeaTina592 gonna look into the enteric-coated ones, the burp thing is exactly why i went gummy in the first place. @NootropicNoah887 i'll check for DHA/EPA listed separately, didnt know that was a thing to look for. guess i got got by the cute bottle. returning these and doing actual research this time 🙃
