Traveling with gummies: Do they melt? TSA rules?
Hey all, got a work trip coming up (plane + some hiking) and I don't want to miss my daily vitamins. But I'm worried about transporting my gummies. Do they melt in luggage? And are there any TSA rules about carrying them? Also, any tips for keeping them fresh on the trail? I usually take a mix of vitamin C and melatonin gummies, if that matters.
I've flown with gummies plenty of times, no TSA issue as long as they're in your carry-on and not liquid. They might get a bit soft in warm cargo, but they won't melt completely unless it's scorching. I'd put them in a small pill organizer or a zip-lock bag to avoid them sticking together. For hiking, I've used a small tin with a silica packet to keep them dry. And hey, if they get a little squished, they still taste good! Just don't leave them in a hot car, learned that the hard way lol.
To add to that, if you're worried about melting, you can put them in a small insulated container or even a thermos for short trips. For longer hikes, I've made my own gummies with a higher melting point using gelatin and less moisture, but that's probably too much for travel. Also, check the TSA website: solid supplements are fine, but if they're gummy-like and have a liquid center, they might get extra screening. Best to keep them in original packaging or a labeled container to avoid questions.
Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely bring them in my carry-on and throw a silica packet in. I'm also thinking of just grabbing a small tin to put them in for the hiking part. Do you think a few days without a fridge will be okay? I'm assuming so, but want to be safe.
Should be fine for a few days. I've kept them in my backpack for a weekend trip and they survived. Just avoid direct sun and humidity. If you're really concerned, you could freeze them before you leave, but they might thaw and get sticky. Honestly, a cool, dark place works.
