Traveling with gummies – do they survive a flight or a hike?
Hey all! I'm heading out on a big trip soon – plane, then a long hike. I always take my gummies everywhere, but I'm worried about them melting in my carry-on or backpack. Has anyone traveled with gummies? Do they hold up? Also, any tips for TSA? I don't want them to confiscate my beloved vitamins!
I've taken gummies on flights multiple times (domestic and international). They're solid, but I always keep them in a separate baggie just in case. TSA doesn't care – they're supplements, not liquids. But yes, they can melt if left in a hot car or in direct sun. I'd say keep them in your personal item, not the overhead bin (which gets cold, actually that's fine, but if it's hot outside, the cabin can get warm on the tarmac). For hiking, I put them in a small insulated pouch with an ice pack if it's hot. But honestly, they're pretty resilient. Just don't leave them in a car.
As a mom who's flown with gummies and dealt with a toddler meltdown, let me tell you – they survived the flight but I was more worried about the meltdown! Lol. Seriously though, I packed them in a hard case, and they were fine. The pressure didn't affect them. But if you're hiking in 90°F, they might get soft. I'd suggest putting them in a cooler or wrapping them in a damp cloth (evaporative cooling works). Also, check the brand – some have a higher melting point. My kids' gummies got a little sticky on a road trip once, but nothing a fridge couldn't fix.
Night shifter here, so I'm used to weird temps and schedules. For traveling, I use a small insulated lunch bag with a reusable ice pack – that keeps them cool but not frozen. TSA is fine with ice packs as long as they're solid. And I read somewhere that gummies are considered solid, so they don't have the 3-1-1 liquid rule. I've had mine checked? No issues. For hiking, I've actually carried them in a metal tin with a little silica gel packet to absorb moisture – avoids stickiness. If they do melt, just put them in the fridge to set, but they might lose shape. Best to keep them cool, but no biggie!
