Are prenatal gummies just candy in disguise?
Okay, so I've been taking these prenatal gummies because my doc said I need more folic acid and DHA. But when I read the label, there's like 4g of added sugar per serving! That's almost a teaspoon. Feels like I'm eating candy, not taking a supplement. Aren't there better options? Or am I overreacting?
You're not overreacting at all. The candy-fication of supplements is a real problem. Gummies are loaded with sugar and often contain gelatin (not vegan) or other junk. Prenatals should be about purity, not taste. I use a whole foods-based powder: no sugar, no artificial stuff. Yeah, it's not a gummy bear, but it's actually good for you and the baby. Convenience isn't worth compromising health.
As a retired nurse, I've seen both sides. Gummies can be helpful for women who struggle with swallowing pills or have morning sickness. But the sugar is concerning, especially for those with gestational diabetes. There are sugar-free or low-sugar gummies out there. Also, check the type of sugar—some use organic cane sugar or fruit juice. Not all are created equal. Maybe look for ones with no added sugar or take a non-gummy option if you can tolerate it.
Thanks guys. RhinoRich, what powder do you use? I'm not vegan but I'd prefer less processed stuff. SproutSid, do you have recs for low-sugar gummies? I've looked at a few but they either taste terrible or are super expensive.
I use Garden of Life Raw Prenatal powder. It's whole food-based, no synthetic vitamins, and no sugar. Taste is... earthy, but mix it with a smoothie and it's fine. Pricey but worth it. Also, check out MegaFood Baby & Me 2—they have a tablet that's food-based with no sugar. For a gummy, maybe SmartyPants Prenatal? They have 2g sugar per serving, which is lower than some.
