Hey all! I'm trying to make my own prenatal gummies at home – I've got a mix of methylfolate, iron bisglycinate, and DHA powder. Used gelatin (beef, 200 bloom) and some agar to set it. Followed a basic recipe but my batch came out like a rubber brick! Too chewy, not gummy at all. What am I doing wrong? Do I need more liquid? Less gelatin? Should I add citric acid? Any tips would be awesome.

Ah, the classic gelatin overdose. You used both gelatin AND agar? That's redundant and will make it tough. Stick to one base. For a softer gummy, I'd say single gelatin (10g per 100ml liquid) and let it bloom properly. Also, iron powder can react with gelatin and cause stiffness – try a lower bloom or add the iron later after cooling a bit. And yes, a little citric acid helps with texture and flavor. DHA might be the culprit too; oily stuff. Next time, maybe use a premix? Good luck!

yo, I tried this once and ended up with a science experiment gone wrong. My advice: ditch the agar unless you're vegan. Gelatin alone is fine. Also, are you using a mold? The thickness matters. I had a batch that was like chewing a tire, and it was because I poured too thick. Try thinner layers. For troubleshooting current brick: you can re-melt with some water and re-pour, but it won't be perfect. Also caffeine helps with the frustration LOL. Keep at it!

Thanks guys! GummyGuru – I'll try single gelatin next time and add the iron later. Quantum – re-melting might save this batch, I'll try thinning it out. One more thing: any tips for flavor? The prenatal powder tastes like pennies. Do you add juice or sweetener? Also, should I bother with a preservative? These are for my wife so I want them to be safe.

For flavor, I add a splash of organic lemon juice and a bit of honey. Stevia works too if you want zero sugar. The citric acid helps mask the metallic taste from iron. For preservation, since you're using gelatin and water, they'll spoil in a few days at room temp. Keep them fridge in an airtight container. You can add a tiny bit of vitamin E oil as antioxidant, or just make small batches. And props for making them for your wife – that's dedication!
