Hey everyone, I just saw this article about folic acid in prenatal gummies being linked to autism? My daughter is pregnant and I'm worried sick. She takes those gummies every day. Is this study legit or is it biased? Here's the link: [link to study] Can anyone make sense of this?

Hi Ivy, I took a look at the study you linked. It's a retrospective cohort study, which can show correlation but not causation. They found an association between high folic acid levels and autism, but the effect was small and only in a specific subset. Also, the study didn't control for all confounders like maternal diet or genetics. Many previous studies show folic acid reduces neural tube defects. So it's not a reason to stop taking prenatal gummies. The media often blows these things out of proportion. I'd advise your daughter to talk to her OB, but I wouldn't panic.

Ivy, I totally get your concern! But remember, correlation != causation. Folic acid is crucial for baby's development. I've read that the synthetic form might not be as good as natural folate, but that's a different issue. Some prenatal gummies use methylfolate instead, which is better absorbed. Maybe your daughter could switch to that if she's worried? But don't quit cold turkey! Also, check the dosage - usually 400-800 mcg is safe. Let me know if you want some brand recommendations!
