My Kid Thinks Probiotic Gummies Are Candy - Help!
Ok so I bought these new probiotic gummies for my 8yo, thinking they'd be healthier than the sugar-laden ones. Big mistake. He grabbed the bottle and before I could stop him, he popped three in his mouth. I yelled 'those aren't candy!' and he goes 'they taste like candy, so what's the difference?' I'm now hiding them on the top shelf. Anyone else have this problem? How do you keep kids from overdosing on these things?
Ugh, I feel you! My daughter did the same with her vitamin gummies. I found a brand that has a really bitter aftertaste - that solved it, she won't touch them now. But then she refuses to take them at all. It's a battle. Maybe try a gummy that has a more 'medicine-y' taste? Or store them in a high cabinet with a child-proof cap. I use a lock box for all supplements, honestly.
Ha! Classic. I'm a biohacker, so I treat my supplements like lab chemicals - they're in a locked cabinet, clearly labeled, and I know the exact dosage. For kids, you need to set boundaries: explain they are medicine, not food. Maybe make a chart where they get one gummy only after brushing teeth, so it's part of a routine. And if they sneak more, the consequences are clear. My nephew tried that with my protein gummies - he learned fast.
Lol, reminds me of when I was baking and my wife mistook my CBD gummies for her gummy vitamins. She ate like four before realizing. The look on her face... Anyway, for your kid, try putting the gummies in a opaque container with a label that says 'supplement - not candy' in big letters. Also, maybe get the sour kind? Kids often don't like the sour ones as much. Or make a game: 'one gummy a day keeps the doctor away' - but be careful with that phrase, might backfire.
I've always avoided gummy vitamins for my kids - they're just candy with vitamins, in my opinion. I make them get their probiotics from food like yogurt, kefir, and fermented veggies. But if you must use gummies, treat them like medicine: keep them out of reach and give them only with supervision. And check the dosage - some have more sugar than you think. My wife used to keep them in the fridge, so they were less tempting and had a different texture - my kids didn't like them cold.
