Probiotic gummies turned hard and sugary - safe to eat?
Hey everyone! So I bought a new bottle of probiotic gummies (the ones with the cute little bear shape) and after a few weeks, they've gotten really hard and there's a white powdery stuff on them. Also, some are sticking together. They're not expired yet. Are they still safe to eat? I'm worried the probiotics might be dead or something.
I've seen that happen with gummies if they get exposed to heat or moisture. The sugar bloom is usually just the sugar crystallizing on the surface, kinda like chocolate bloom. It's not harmful, but the texture might be off. But the probiotics? I'm skeptical if they're even alive in gummies anyway. I'd probably toss them to be safe, especially if they've changed texture that much. Better safe than sorry.
I think it's a sign they're past their prime. I had a similar issue with my vegan gummy vitamins and I contacted the company. They said it's still safe to consume but might not be as effective. But for probiotics, heat can kill them, so if they got warm, they might be useless. I'd check the bottle for any storage instructions. Also, maybe try to keep them in a cool, dry place next time.
Thanks for the input! I guess I'll play it safe and chuck them. It's a bummer because they weren't cheap. I'll store the next bottle better. Also, @QuantumQuincy, I know you're skeptical about probiotics in gummies, but I've noticed a difference in my digestion when I take them. But maybe it's just a placebo, haha.
Ha! Placebo is a powerful thing. But honestly, if it works for you, great. I just think the science isn't there for gummies to deliver live probiotics effectively. But do what makes you feel good. Just be careful with those hard gummies - might break a tooth! 😂
