Probiotic gummies turned into rock candy - safe to eat?
Hey guys, I bought a new bottle of probiotic gummies about a month ago. They were fine at first, but now they’ve turned super hard and have this white powdery coating. Some are even stuck together. Are they safe to eat? I don’t want to waste them but also don’t want to get sick.
Ugh, I feel your pain. That happened to my kids' gummy vitamins last summer. I think it's sugar bloom from temp changes. I chucked mine just to be safe. Not worth the risk with probiotics!
Actually, that white coating is likely sugar or maltodextrin that crystallized. It's harmless. But if they're rock hard, the probiotics might be dead. If they've been stored in heat or humidity, the live cultures degrade. I'd toss them and get a new bottle. Better safe than sorry.
Thanks for the replies. I store them in my pantry which can get warm. I guess I’ll toss them. Any recommendations for a brand that doesn’t do this? I tried these because they were on sale.
I’ve had good luck with the 'Probiotic Gems' brand. They're more stable and don't turn into rocks. Also, store them in the fridge if your house runs warm. Keeps them fresh and the probiotics alive.
