DIY Sea Moss Gummies – HELP! Batch turned into jelly?
So I tried making my own sea moss gummies at home using gelatin and some vitamin C powder. Followed a recipe I found online, but they came out like a weird jelly blob, not gummies. Anyone know what went wrong? I used 2 tbsp gelatin, 1 cup sea moss gel, and some juice. Probably too much liquid? Any tips would be great!
Hey @UrbanUma277 ! I've been making sea moss gummies for my family for years. The issue might be the ratio of gelatin to liquid. For firmer gummies, you need more gelatin – try 3-4 tbsp per cup of liquid. Also, make sure you let it simmer gently so the gelatin fully dissolves. And don't forget to use a silicone mold and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. I also add a bit of honey or maple syrup for taste. Let me know how it goes!
Adding to what EcoEllen said, if you're using agar instead of gelatin, it sets differently. Agar needs to be boiled to activate and sets at room temp. But your recipe said gelatin, so yeah. Also, vitamin C powder can affect the setting – some acidic ingredients can weaken gelatin. Maybe try adding a bit more gelatin or let it set longer. Also, are you using a standard mold? Sometimes they need a bit of oiling to release properly.
I'm just a grandma who wants to make healthy snacks for my grandkids. I've had this problem before. You might be using too much juice or fruit puree, which adds extra water. Try reducing the liquid a bit and add the sea moss gel as your main base. Also, don't forget to bloom the gelatin in cold water first – that really helps. Bless your heart for trying! Let us know if the next batch works.
