My sea moss gummies changed color and texture - still safe?

Hey everyone! So I got a new jar of sea moss gummies from my favorite brand, but after a few weeks they've turned a darker color and gotten really hard. Also, some of them are sticking together like crazy. I know sea moss is natural, but is this normal? Are they still safe to eat? I don't want to waste my money but also don't want to get sick.

Hey! Biohacker here. Color and texture changes are usually just oxidation and moisture loss. The darkening is from the seaweed compounds reacting with air, and hardening is because they're losing moisture. If they don't smell funky or have any mold, they're likely safe, but less potent. I'd recommend storing them in an airtight container in the fridge to extend shelf life. You can even revive them with a tiny bit of moisture, but honestly, they've probably lost some efficacy. Check the expiration date and if it's past, toss them. Better safe than sorry.

I grew up using traditional sea moss gel, and we'd never see it get hard unless it was old. Gummies are different, but the same principle applies: they're not like synthetic vitamins. If they're getting hard and stuck together, it's a sign they're past their prime. I'd personally not risk it if they've changed that much. Maybe try a different brand that uses better preservatives or a higher quality sea moss. Also, you can always make your own sea moss gel and mix it with something - it's more natural.

From a holistic perspective, our bodies are attuned to nature. If the gummies have changed significantly, they may not be providing the intended benefits. However, if they've just hardened due to exposure to air, they are likely okay but less effective. I suggest checking for any off-putting odor or visible mold. If none, you can rehydrate them by placing a damp paper towel in the jar (not touching the gummies) for a few hours. But even then, they won't be as good as fresh. Also, consider that your body might be telling you to switch to a more whole-food source of sea moss, like gel or raw. Sometimes processed forms lose essential qualities.
