Sea Moss Gummies Changed Color and Got Hard - Safe to Eat?
Hey everyone! I bought sea moss gummies from a local health store about 2 months ago. I opened the bottle today and noticed they've changed color (from dark green to a light brownish) and they feel really hard, like candy. Some even have a white powdery stuff on them. Are they safe to eat? I don't want to waste them but also don't want to get sick.
Hi there! From a retired nurse's perspective, I'd say be cautious. The color change and hardening are likely just due to moisture loss or sugar crystallization, which isn't necessarily harmful. But the white powder could be mold if there was moisture. Check for any other signs of spoilage like a weird smell or sliminess. If in doubt, toss them out. Better safe than sorry! You can also store them in the fridge to extend their shelf life.
I've seen this with my own gummies. It's usually just sugar bloom - the sugar recrystallizes on the surface. That's harmless. The hardening might be because they dried out a bit. I'd say they're still fine as long as there's no mold or bad smell. You can soften them by putting a slice of bread in the jar for a day. But yeah, as Holly said, if anything seems off, don't risk it.
Ah, the classic 'gummies turned into rocks' situation. I've had tons of gummy vitamins do that, especially if I leave them in a warm car. The color change is normal too (oxidization). Just make sure they don't have an off taste. If they taste bitter or weird, bin them. Otherwise, they're probably fine. And hey, they might even be more concentrated? Just a thought, but I'm not a scientist. 😅
As an amateur chef, I'd say the white powder is likely just sugar or maybe even sea salt if they're sea moss gummies. That's not a big deal. But if you're worried, you could always melt them down and use them in a smoothie or oatmeal - that way you're not eating them straight. Just heat them gently to dissolve. But honestly, if they pass the smell and taste test, I'd eat them. Waste not, want not!
