New Study on Melatonin in Sleep Gummies – Legit or Just Marketing?
Hey everyone! I just came across this study (PMID: 38456789) that says melatonin in sleep gummies might not actually improve sleep quality, and the doses are often way off from what's on the label. I've been taking these gummies for months and they seem to help, but now I'm second-guessing. Is this study legit or is it just another hit piece on supplements? Curious what you all think!
Interesting! I've seen similar studies before. Honestly, I think melatonin is a tricky one – it works best for regulating your body clock, not necessarily knocking you out. I use mine only when I travel across time zones. But the dosing thing is a real concern. I always look for third-party tested brands now. Do you know which brand you take? Maybe check if they have a COA.
I'm with Zoe on the third-party testing. But I also think that studies like that can be biased against supplements, especially if they're funded by pharma. I've had great results with a blend of melatonin and other natural stuff like chamomile and valerian root. Maybe the study just focused on melatonin alone, which misses the point of gummies that combine ingredients. #justmytwocents
Good points all around. As someone who fasts, I've noticed that sleep gummies with melatonin can affect my next-day hunger signals or something? Not sure if it's related. But to the OP: have you tried taking a lower dose? Maybe the study is about high doses, and you're just taking a small amount. Also, check if the journal is peer-reviewed. Lots of predatory journals out there.
Thanks for the replies! My gummies have 3mg melatonin plus some chamomile extract. I checked the label, and it says 'proprietary blend' – not very transparent. I'll look into the third-party testing thing. And yeah, the journal seems legit (Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine), so that's a bit concerning. Maybe I'll cut back to half a gummy and see if it still works. Appreciate the input, everyone!
