Gummies turned opaque and hard – still safe?
Hey everyone! So I bought a new bottle of omega-3 softgels like a month ago, and I opened it yesterday to find that they went from clear amber to kinda cloudy white and they're rock hard. They're not expired yet, but I'm worried. Anyone had this happen? Still safe to eat? The bottle says to keep in a cool dry place, I kept them in my pantry which stays around 70F.
OMG that happened to my fish oil once! I googled it and I think it's just the gelatin drying out or something? I ate mine and I'm still alive lol. But I'm not a scientist. Maybe email the company? They usually have good customer service!
It's likely just a physical change from moisture loss or temp fluctuations. Gelatin capsules can dehydrate and become brittle, and the oil inside can oxidize causing color change. If they're within date and don't smell rancid (fishy or paint-like), they're probably safe but may have lost potency. I wouldn't risk it if it smells off though.
I'd toss them. Not worth the gamble for a bottle of supplements. I've had gummies fuse together and I just threw them out. Better safe than sorry. Plus you can always use the 'maybe they're still good' excuse to buy a new flavor 😅
