My kid thought the softgels were gummy bears!
So my 5-year-old saw my bottle of omega-3 softgels on the counter and thought they were gummy bears. He managed to open the child-proof cap (go figure) and popped a couple in his mouth before I caught him. He then spit them out saying 'these are gross, they're not sweet!' I'm glad he didn't swallow them, but now I'm worried he might think all vitamins are candy. How do you guys keep your supplements away from kids? Any funny stories?
Haha! That's classic! My daughter did the same with my fish oil softgels. She said they were 'squishy and weird.' Now I keep them in a high cabinet, and I also switched to flavored gummy vitamins for myself (even though I'm an adult) so she doesn't get tempted by the look of the softgels. But yeah, definitely keep them out of reach. And maybe put them in a different container that doesn't look like candy? Glad your little one didn't swallow them!
I feel you. My wife thought my vitamin E softgels were some kind of new snack and nearly ate a handful. She said they looked like 'tiny juice pearls.' I had to explain they were for skin health, not snacking. Now I keep them in the fridge, labeled with a big 'VITAMINS' sticker. Also, I've found that if you bite a softgel and squeeze the oil into yogurt, it's a good way to get your kids to take them (if they need the nutrients). Just a tip!
Oh, my mom used to give us those old-school cod liver oil softgels, and we'd pretend they were pills from a secret spy mission. But I totally get the candy confusion. My nephew once ate a whole bottle of my sister's vitamin C gummies (they were sugar-free, luckily). Maybe try keeping them in a lockbox or a high shelf? Or get a vitamin organizer with a child-proof lock. Also, I've seen some brands that sell softgels in blister packs, which might be harder for kids to open. Just a thought!
Haha, my husband is the culprit in our house. He came home from the gym, saw my bottle of omega softgels, and thought they were new protein energy chews. He popped two and then made a face like 'bleh.' He said they tasted like fish. Now I have to hide them from him! But seriously, I think it's important to talk to kids about not taking anything without asking an adult. And for texture-averse kids, maybe try gummies or liquid vitamins? My kids love the gummies, but I prefer the softgels for my keto diet because they're often lower in carbs. Good luck!
