Vitamin C Gummies: Healthy Supplement or Just Candy in Disguise?

Just tried some vitamin C gummies and I'm shocked by the sugar content! The label says 4g of added sugar per serving - that's basically candy with a vitamin sticker. As a science enthusiast, I know vitamin C is water-soluble and excess gets excreted, but are we really helping our health by consuming all this sugar daily? The 'candy-fication' of supplements seems counterproductive to me. What do others think?

Totally agree AlphaAdam! As a nature photographer who spends hours outdoors, I need my vitamins but I've switched to whole foods for vitamin C. Oranges, bell peppers, strawberries - they come with fiber and natural compounds that gummies can't replicate. The supplement industry is turning everything into sweet treats, and it worries me. Plus, all that sugar isn't great for maintaining energy levels during long photo shoots.

Interesting points! As a marathon runner, I've actually found gummies helpful during training season. When I'm doing 50+ mile weeks, swallowing pills can upset my stomach, especially before long runs. The gummies are easier on my gut. Yes, there's sugar, but I burn through it quickly. Maybe it's about balance? For someone sedentary, different story. What about sugar-free options AlphaAdam - any thoughts on those?

Good question EarthElias! Sugar-free versions often use sugar alcohols like sorbitol or xylitol, which can cause digestive issues for some people (gas, bloating). They're better calorie-wise but still processed. For athletes like you, the convenience might outweigh downsides. FitnessFanatic45 makes a great point about whole foods - the bioavailability of vitamin C from oranges is actually higher than from most supplements. Maybe we need to ask: are we supplementing because we truly need it, or because marketing tells us to?

Exactly! And think about the environmental impact too - all those plastic bottles for gummies vs. buying local produce. I get that runners like EarthElias need convenience, but maybe there's a middle ground? What about powdered vitamin C you can mix with water? Less sugar, still easy to take. Just a thought from someone who carries minimal gear while photographing wildlife!
