Vitamin D Gummies Turned Hard and White – Safe to Eat?
Hey everyone, so I bought a new bottle of Vitamin D gummies last month, and I just opened it to find that they've gotten all hard and have this white powdery stuff on them. Some are even sticking together! I know gummies can change over time, but I'm worried they might be spoiled or something. Are they still safe to eat? They're not expired or anything. Any ideas?
That white powder is likely sugar bloom, it happens when moisture gets in and then evaporates, leaving sugar crystals on the surface. It's totally cosmetic and safe. As for the hardening, that's just them drying out a bit. They should be fine to eat, but they might be chewier and less tasty. If they're not moldy and smell ok, I'd say go for it. I've eaten gummies like that all the time.
I'm a bit skeptical about eating gummies that have changed texture. Even if it's just sugar bloom, I'd be worried about the vitamin content degrading. Maybe they lost potency? I'd rather toss them and get a fresh bottle. My rule: if the texture or color is off, it's a red flag. Better safe than sorry, especially with supplements.
Actually, the hardening and sugar bloom are pretty common in gummies. It's just a physical change, not a chemical breakdown. The vitamin D is stable, so it should still be effective. To prevent this, store them in a cool, dry place, and make sure the lid is tight after each use. If you're really concerned, you could always try melting them down and remolding them, but that might destroy the vitamins. I'd say they're safe, but I'm a DIY guy, so I'd probably just eat them as is. Maybe with a glass of water to help them go down!
Thanks for the replies! I guess I'll go ahead and eat them since it's just sugar bloom. But I'll definitely keep the lid tighter from now on. Appreciate the help!
