Traveling with ACV Gummies: Do They Melt? TSA?
Hey all, I'm heading on a 2-week trip that includes a plane flight, a road trip, and some hiking. I want to bring my ACV gummies for energy and gut health on the go. Do these things melt in heat? Will TSA give me issues if they're in my carry-on? Any tips for storage while traveling? Thanks!
I've taken gummy vitamins on flights many times. TSA doesn't care about solid gummies, just put them in your carry-on or checked bag. They're not a liquid, so no 3-1-1 hassle. But they can melt if left in a hot car. Keep them in your backpack or a cooler if you're hiking in the sun. Also, I've found that if they do get a little soft, just pop them in the fridge and they firm up.
Greg is right. On paleo, I avoid gummies with sugar, but these use natural stuff, so I'm good. For heat, I'd put them in a small insulated lunch bag with an ice pack if you're leaving them in a hot car. And when flying, keep them in the original container to avoid any questions about what they are. But you can also transfer to a zip-lock if you're short on space. Just label it.
From a chef's perspective, gummies are basically sugar and gelatin, so they'll melt around 100°F (38°C). In your checked luggage, the cargo hold might get colder, but it can also be unpressurized. I'd definitely keep them in a carry-on and in your personal item, not the overhead, because the overhead can get warm. And if you're hiking in hot weather, wrap them in a wet bandana (evaporative cooling) to keep them cool. Also, don't forget they might get squished in a backpack, so use a hard case or the original bottle.
I've carried these on road trips with kids, and they survived fine. But once, left them in the car during summer and they turned into a blob! So def keep them with you. Also, if you're traveling internationally, check if the country allows gummy vitamins. Some have restrictions on certain ingredients. But for domestic, you're fine. I usually put them in my purse or carry-on and never had an issue. TSA just sees a bottle of gummies, no problem.
