Anyone tried making DIY gummies with vitamin powder? Need help!
Hey all, I've been trying to make my own gummy vitamins at home using gelatin and some biotin powder, but my last batch turned out like rubber cement! They're chewy but not in a good way - more like old tires. I followed a recipe I found online but something went wrong. Any tips for a fellow DIYer? Or should I just stick to buying OLLY? I'm all about saving money, but not if it means choking down these monsters.
I've never tried making them myself (I'm a bit skeptical about DIY vitamins - how do you know the dosage is right?), but I've seen people use agar instead of gelatin. Maybe you overdid the gelatin? Also, did you use a silicone mold? That can affect texture. Also, maybe your vitamin powder isn't dissolving well - that can cause weird texture. Have you tried heating the mixture more maybe? Or adding some citric acid for tartness?
I'm a yoga instructor and I've made my own gummies with agar-agar (vegan) and it worked okay. I use a mix of fruit juice and a tiny bit of honey, plus my vitamins. The key is to not boil it too long and let it set in the fridge for at least 4 hours. Also, I add a little sunflower lecithin to help everything mix well. Maybe try that? If it's too chewy, you might have used too much gelatin or not enough liquid. Also, I've used a candy thermometer to get the right temp - I think around 180°F is good for agar. Keep experimenting, it's trial and error!
Thanks for the tips! I did use a silicone mold, but I think I did boil it too long. The recipe said 15 minutes of simmering - maybe that was too much. I'll try the lecithin idea and maybe a lower temp. Also, Minda, good point about dosage - I'm using a scale to measure powder, but I'm realizing it's hard to get it exact. Maybe I'll just buy the OLLY ones when they're on sale. I'm all for saving cash, but not if I'm going to end up with a batch of rubber balls!
