THREAD: B12 supplements: game-changer or just expensive pee?Started by SupplementSteve43

Hey folks, been diving deep into B12 protocols lately. I've been experimenting with methylcobalamin sublinguals vs. adenosylcobalamin injections. The energy boost from injections is unreal - I'm hitting PRs in the gym and my brain fog is completely gone. Anyone else notice a difference between the different forms? Also, what's your take on the whole 'active vs. inactive' B12 debate?

Steve, totally agree on the injections! I switched from cyanocobalamin to methyl-B12 about 6 months ago and it's been night and day. My homocysteine levels dropped from 14 to 8 μmol/L. But here's my question: does anyone actually need B12 supplements if they're not vegan? I keep hearing conflicting info about whether omnivores can even absorb supplemental forms properly.

As someone who's been plant-based for 8 years, I can tell you B12 is non-negotiable. I use a spray that combines methylcobalamin with folate - game changer for my energy levels. But I'm skeptical about all the hype. Are we just over-supplementing? My bloodwork shows my levels are through the roof, but my functional medicine doc says that's fine. What do you all think about optimal ranges vs. just 'normal' lab ranges?

Okay, I'm coming at this from the parent perspective. My kids (8 and 10) are picky eaters and I've been giving them B12 gummies for years. Pediatrician says their levels are fine, but I worry about long-term effects. Are gummies even effective? The ingredient list has so much sugar! Has anyone found a good sugar-free option that kids will actually take?

GummyGuru - you're right to be concerned about sugar! Look for sublingual drops instead - they absorb directly through the mucous membranes. BioBob, to your point about omnivores: even meat-eaters can have absorption issues due to gut health or medications. Lily, I think optimal is definitely above 'normal' ranges - I aim for 800-1000 pg/mL. Anyone tried combining B12 with other B vitamins for synergistic effects?

Great discussion! Steve, I'm doing a B-complex with my methyl-B12 and the synergy is real. But here's a curveball: what about timing? I've read B12 can interfere with sleep if taken too late. I've been doing mine first thing AM. GummyGuru - my niece uses a strawberry-flavored liquid B12 that she loves, no sugar added. Maybe worth trying?
