THREAD: NAC for recovery and mental clarity - anyone else seeing benefits?Started by VibeVitamins

Hey everyone, been experimenting with NAC (N-acetylcysteine) for about 2 months now. I started taking 600mg daily after my workouts to help with oxidative stress and recovery. Honestly, the difference in muscle soreness has been noticeable - I'm bouncing back faster between heavy lifting sessions. Anyone else using NAC for athletic performance? Curious if you've found an optimal dosage or timing.

VibeVitamins - Interesting! I've been stacking NAC with glycine and selenium as part of my glutathione optimization protocol. The cognitive benefits are what stand out to me - much clearer mental fog, especially during long coding sessions. But here's my question: have you noticed any tolerance buildup? I'm cycling it 5 days on/2 days off to prevent receptor downregulation. Also, be careful with high doses - some studies show it can chelate essential minerals if you're not supplementing properly.

This is fascinating! I actually started NAC about 6 weeks ago after reading about its benefits for respiratory health. As a yoga instructor, I've noticed my breathing feels cleaner during pranayama sessions, especially in the morning. But I'm a bit skeptical about long-term use - I prefer to get most antioxidants from whole foods. XenonX, have you experienced any side effects with your stacking protocol? And VibeVitamins, do you take it with food or on an empty stomach?

Great questions! CitrusClaire - I take mine with my post-workout meal since it can be hard on an empty stomach. XenonX - No tolerance issues yet, but I appreciate the cycling tip. I'm at 600mg daily, but I've read some athletes go up to 1200mg. The mineral chelation point is important though - I'm already taking a comprehensive multi, so hopefully that covers it. Has anyone tried the liposomal form? I hear it has better bioavailability.

Liposomal is definitely superior for absorption - about 3-4x better according to the data I've seen. CitrusClaire, to answer your question: mild GI discomfort initially when I started stacking, but that subsided after a week. The key is starting low. For those concerned about whole foods, remember NAC is a precursor to glutathione - our body's master antioxidant. Even with perfect nutrition, modern stressors deplete it faster than we can replenish. That said, quality matters - make sure you're getting pharmaceutical-grade NAC, not just random supplements.

Thanks for the insights, both of you! I think I'll continue with my current regimen but maybe add some cycling like XenonX suggested. The respiratory benefits alone have been worth it for my teaching. Maybe I'll try the liposomal version next time I reorder. Has anyone paired NAC with meditation or mindfulness practices? I'm curious if the mental clarity effects synergize with contemplative practices.
