THREAD: Omega-3 supplements: Are they really worth the hype or just expensive fish oil?Started by EcoEllen

Hey everyone! I've been giving my kids Nordic Naturals Omega-3 gummies for about 6 months now, and I've noticed a huge difference in their focus during homeschool. My 8-year-old used to get really distracted, but now he sits through lessons much better. Has anyone else seen improvements with their kids? I'm curious if it's just us or if there's real science behind this. Also, any recommendations for vegan Omega-3 sources? We're trying to reduce our fish consumption for environmental reasons.

I'm skeptical about all these supplements. My doctor said most people get enough Omega-3 from a balanced diet - why spend $30 a month on pills? I tried fish oil capsules years ago and they just gave me fishy burps. Plus, aren't there concerns about mercury in some brands? My sister swears by them for her arthritis, but I think it might be placebo effect. Has anyone actually seen independent studies that prove these work for brain health?

As a fitness trainer, I recommend Omega-3 to all my clients for joint health and inflammation reduction. The anti-inflammatory effects are well-documented - it helps with post-workout recovery. I take 2g daily of algae-based DHA/EPA (I'm vegan). PurePete49, you might want to try enteric-coated capsules to avoid the burps! For those working out regularly, have you noticed better recovery times since starting Omega-3?

Biohacker here! I've been experimenting with different Omega-3 ratios and timing. Current protocol: 3g EPA/DHA split between morning and night, combined with black pepper extract for absorption. Blood tests show my inflammation markers dropped 40% in 90 days. But quality matters - look for IFOS-certified brands. Anyone tracking their biomarkers? I'm curious if others are seeing measurable changes beyond subjective feelings.

Thanks for the vegan tips, CrystalCathy! I'll look into algae-based options. DynamicDan, that's fascinating about the biomarkers - I haven't done blood tests but might consider it. PurePete49, I understand the skepticism about cost. For us, the behavioral improvements in my kids feel worth it, but I do worry about sustainability. Has anyone found affordable, eco-friendly brands that actually work?

Okay, I'll admit the biomarker data from DynamicDan is interesting. Maybe I'll ask my doctor about testing my levels before dismissing it entirely. But I still think people should try dietary sources first - we eat salmon twice a week. CrystalCathy, do you really think most people need supplements if they eat fish regularly? And what about flaxseeds - aren't those a good plant source?
