THREAD: My toddler thinks my prenatal gummies are candy - help!Started by OP

Okay, I need to vent and maybe get some advice. I'm 5 months pregnant and taking these prenatal gummy vitamins - they're berry flavored and honestly pretty tasty. Yesterday my 3-year-old saw the bottle on the counter and started begging for 'candy.' I explained they were mommy's special vitamins, but of course that made him want them MORE. He had a full meltdown when I wouldn't give him one! Then my husband tried to help by saying 'They're yucky medicine' but now the kid is suspicious of ALL gummies, including his fruit snacks. Parenting win? Not really. Anyone else deal with this?

Oh man, this takes me back! When my kids were little (they're teens now - time flies!), we had the exact same issue with those Flintstones vitamins. Remember those? My daughter called them 'dinosaur candy' and would try to climb the pantry shelves to get them. We ended up putting them in a locked cabinet - felt like we were guarding Fort Knox! But honestly, I miss those days. Today's gummy vitamins are way fancier though. Have you tried explaining they're 'mommy's special berries for the baby'? Sometimes framing it as something FOR the sibling-to-be helps.

First - congrats on the pregnancy! Second - this is exactly why I advocate for sugar-free options whenever possible. Many prenatal gummies are loaded with glucose syrup and sucrose. They're basically candy with vitamins added! No wonder kids confuse them. Have you checked the ingredients? There are some great stevia-sweetened options now that don't taste like medicine but also don't trigger that 'candy' association. Might be worth switching if texture isn't an issue for you. Also - child-safe bottles are a must! The push-and-turn ones saved us.

Not to be that guy, but this is why I stick to whole foods and avoid processed supplements when possible. Our ancestors didn't need gummy vitamins! That said - practical advice: can you take yours at night after kiddo's bedtime? Or switch to pill form temporarily? I know some pregnant friends who had to do that because the gummy texture made them nauseous anyway. Also, maybe make a big show of taking 'mommy's boring white pills' while giving him his 'special kid gummies' (the ones actually for him)? Create that distinction?

Thanks everyone! SolarSam - the 'special berries for baby' idea is genius, going to try that tomorrow. FloraFinn - I checked my bottle and YIKES you're right about the sugar content. Might look into alternatives for my next bottle. Zack - I wish I could do pills but the texture thing is real - these gummies are the only thing that doesn't make my morning sickness worse. Update: tonight I let my son watch me take one while making a serious 'grown-up medicine face' and he seemed convinced they're not fun anymore. Victory? We'll see how long it lasts!
