THREAD: DIY Gummy Vitamin Disaster - Help with Homemade Softgels Recipe!Started by OP

Hey everyone, I tried making my own gummy vitamins at home using gelatin and some vitamin C powder I had. Followed a basic recipe online but they came out super rubbery and wouldn't set right - some are still sticky after 24 hours! Anyone have tips for getting the texture closer to store-bought softgels? Also wondering if agar would work better than gelatin for a vegan option. Thanks!

OP, you're overcomplicating things. Stick with plain gelatin and a simple syrup base - that's how they've been made for decades. Vitamin powders can mess with the chemistry. Try using liquid vitamins instead, and make sure you're blooming the gelatin properly in cold water first. My grandma's recipe never fails: 1 cup juice, 3 tbsp gelatin, 1 tbsp honey. Add vitamins after it's slightly cooled.

Honestly, why risk it? Store-bought gummies are tested for proper dosage and safety. What if you don't mix the vitamin powder evenly? My kids could get too much one day and none the next. And are you sure your kitchen is clean enough? Mold grows easily in homemade gummies. Just buy the organic brand we use - it's not worth the hassle or potential health risks.

Forget the texture issues - let's talk FLAVOR! If they taste like chalky vitamins, no one will eat them anyway. 😂 Try infusing with real fruit purees instead of just juice. Raspberry masks vitamin taste amazingly. Also, a tiny pinch of citric acid makes them tangy like store ones. Pro tip: add a splash of elderberry syrup for color AND extra antioxidants. Who cares if they're perfect softgels if they're delicious?

Thanks all! KaleKen20 - gonna try your grandma's method with liquid vitamins. FloraFinn278 - I get the safety concern, I'm measuring carefully and using mold inhibitors. MountainMike773 - LOVE the fruit puree idea, definitely trying raspberry! Update: tried agar batch - way too firm, like gummy bullets lol. Back to gelatin!
