THREAD: My toddler thinks my gummy vitamins are candy - help!Started by OP

So my 4-year-old found my bottle of omega-3 softgels and thought they were gummy bears. I caught him trying to chew one like candy! He made the funniest face when it burst in his mouth - said it tasted 'fishy and yucky.' Now he won't touch any of my supplements, even the actual gummy ones, because he's convinced they're all gross. Anyone else have kids (or spouses!) who confuse vitamins with treats?

Oh man, that fishy aftertaste from omega-3 softgels is no joke! I've tried so many brands trying to find one that doesn't leave that ocean-y flavor. For kids, have you considered the chewable fruit-flavored ones? The texture is more like a soft candy than those gel capsules. My niece loves the citrus ones - she calls them her 'special orange snacks.' Just make sure they're out of reach!

Actually, the gelatin coating on softgels is designed to dissolve at body temperature, not in the mouth. Your son experienced what we call 'premature rupture' - not dangerous with most supplements, but definitely unpleasant! For children, I'd recommend either traditional gummies (check sugar content) or liquid drops you can mix into food. The American Academy of Pediatrics has guidelines about supplement safety around kids.

This reminds me of when I was a kid in the 90s - we had those Flintstones chewables that were basically chalky candy. My brother used to hide them in his cheeks like a hamster! Modern softgels are definitely trickier. Maybe try making it a game? I've seen parents use those weekly pill organizers with stickers - 'Tuesday is purple vitamin day!' Works better than the surprise fish explosion method 😂

Ugh I feel this! Between my protein packs, pre-workout, and supplements, my home office looks like a pharmacy. My partner keeps almost taking my B12 softgels thinking they're melatonin gummies. Pro tip: get a lockbox or high cabinet. For kids, those gummy multivitamins shaped like animals usually work - my nephew takes his without fuss if we call them 'bear snacks.' Just gotta be consistent with the routine!
