THREAD: Softgels vs. Gummies: Are we just eating candy with vitamins?Started by MindfulMila48

Ugh, just looked at the label on my new gummy vitamins and they have like 3g of sugar per serving! I get they're trying to make them taste good, but isn't this just candy-fication of supplements? I started taking these for health, not to satisfy my sweet tooth. What's the point if I'm adding sugar to my diet? Anyone else bothered by this?

Hey MindfulMila48, I feel you! I switched to gummies because I could never remember to take pills, but the sugar thing does bug me. My meditation app says to be mindful of what I consume, and sugary supplements seem counterproductive. But honestly, if it means I actually take my vitamins daily instead of forgetting, maybe it's worth it? What do you guys think - convenience over purity?

Great discussion! Scientifically, the sugar in most gummy vitamins is minimal compared to actual candy - typically 2-4g vs 20g+ in a candy bar. However, the 'candy-fication' trend is real. Many manufacturers use gelatin, colors, and sweeteners to appeal to taste buds. Softgels often have purer formulations without added sugars. But absorption rates vary - some studies show gummies might have lower nutrient bioavailability. It's a trade-off between compliance and optimal delivery!

NatureNancy - interesting point about absorption! BioBob47, I get the convenience factor (I need my caffeine gummies to function lol), but shouldn't supplements prioritize health first? Maybe we're normalizing treating vitamins like treats. I've seen kids' gummies that look identical to candy - isn't that dangerous? Maybe I'll switch to softgels even if they're less 'fun' to take.

True, MindfulMila48! Maybe I need to be more disciplined. NatureNancy, any recommendations for sugar-free options that still work well? I tried some chalky tablets before and gave up after a week. The gummy habit is hard to break once you start! Maybe this is a mindfulness challenge for me - taking supplements shouldn't be about taste anyway.
