THREAD: My toddler thinks Vitamin D gummies are candy - help!Started by GlowGigi

Okay, I need to vent and maybe get some advice. My 3-year-old found my bottle of Vitamin D gummies yesterday and thought they were 'special candy.' I caught him trying to open the child-proof cap (which he almost succeeded at - scary!). When I finally got him to understand they're vitamins, he threw a full tantrum because he wanted more 'candy.' Now he keeps asking for 'orange candy medicine' every hour. Anyone else deal with this? I'm so sleep-deprived I almost took one myself thinking it was my melatonin gummy last night!

Oh man, Gigi, I feel you! Not with kids, but my partner did something similar when we were in Bali last month. I take Vitamin D gummies since I'm indoors coding all day, and he thought they were local fruit snacks I'd bought. Ate three before I noticed! He said they tasted 'weirdly healthy' lol. Maybe try putting them in a clearly labeled medicine container on a high shelf? I keep mine with my first-aid kit now.

As a runner, I'm super careful about supplement storage - gotta protect those bones! But texture issues? My niece refuses any gummy vitamins because she says they're 'slimy.' Her mom switched to liquid drops mixed into orange juice. Maybe try a different form if the gummy association is too strong? Also, definitely get a lockbox for meds/supplements if the kid is getting clever with caps. Safety first!

Nancy - Bali sounds amazing! And your partner's 'weirdly healthy' comment made me laugh. My husband did something similar with my prenatal gummies last year - ate half the bottle thinking they were 'new gummy bears.' Men! 😂
Elias - Good call on the texture thing. My kid is weird about textures too (won't eat bananas if they have a single spot). Liquid drops might work better. And yeah, I'm ordering a lockbox today. The child-proof cap clearly isn't toddler-proof enough!

Liquid drops are a great idea! I use those when traveling since gummies can melt in hot climates. Pro tip: some brands make unflavored drops you can add to anything. Also, maybe turn it into a learning moment? Like 'these are special grown-up vitamins' with a sticker chart for when he remembers NOT to touch them? Though with a 3-year-old, bribing with actual candy might work better haha. Hang in there!
